DAY 5 – I feel so hiiigh!

Huayhuash Circuito Descend Cuyoc Pass

Start: Viconga Hot Springs (4,360 m / 14,304 ft)
Pass: Cuyoc pass (5,020 m / 16,470 ft)
End: Guanacpatay (4,400 m / 14,436 ft)
Distance: 8.7 km / 5.4 miles
Total elevation gain: 660 m / 2,165 ft

Fully revitalised, we are ready for our next big challenge: Cuyoc, our first 5,000m pass! For the sake of completeness: the Cuyoc pass is signed as 4,950 m (16,240 ft) but you have to hike up to 5,020 m (16,470 ft) to cross the pass. The trail immediately starts with a moderate but strenuous climb, that doesn’t seem to end. But suddenly, as we see the pass approaching, we regain all our energy and run to the mind-blowing view. We made it! The bitter freezing wind didn’t stop us from a little victory dance. We experienced a strange mix of conflicting emotions: feeling so tall, as we made it up to 5,020 m, and at the same time feeling extremely small, facing the greatness of the snow-capped mountain range in front of us. Even while descending, we constantly looked back with gratitude for the accomplishment and panorama Cuyoc pass has offered us. The Guanacpatay valley is the perfect place to reminisce on everything you’ve seen and done this day.
